Andrew Killey passes the KWP! baton

KWP! Managing Director, John Baker, announced recently that Andrew Killey, founding partner of the acclaimed South Australian advertising agency has formally retired as chairman.

“While Andrew has been non-executive chairman for 3 years, he handed over day-to-day, hands-on role in the agency several years ago. Andrew decided that it was a good time to pass on the chairmanship baton as his own consultancy Brand-A continues to grow,” said John Baker.

“Andrew’s departure is now the last step in the intergenerational change. The new board will be in the capable hands of non-executive Chairman Steve Wise, a member of the Board for the last two years. All the structures are now in place to ensure KWP continues to be a vibrant business that is well positioned for growth.”

In April 1991, in the midst of the recession then Treasurer Paul Keating said “we had to have”, Andrew Killey cofounded KWP! with his long-time business partner Peter Withy.

“I’m not sure KWP! would have succeeded as well it did had it not been for the difficult business conditions prevailing at the time,” Andrew Killey said.

“In a world where advertising agencies were very much stratified according to a ‘presidential’ model of management, we were very much the ‘disrupters’. We put our creative and ideas people in direct contact with the clients.”

Following KWP’s acquisition of Clemenger BBDO’s Adelaide office, the agency now offers one of the most comprehensive and integrated suites of high-end marketing communications services in the country.

Positioning itself as an ‘agency in Adelaide’ rather than an ‘Adelaide agency’, KWP boasts branches in Sydney and Darwin and is now ranked among the top 3 creative agencies in the country. John Baker also praised Andrew Killey’s significant contribution to South Australian life . Andrew has been a SANFL Commissioner, chaired the Adelaide Festival of Arts Board and served on the boards of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, the Adelaide Entertainment Centre and the Norwood Football Club, among others. He is also on the board of Still Aware, an organisation that raises the awareness of stillbirth and the Kain Foundation, dedicated to assisting young people who have “fallen through the cracks”.

“While I’m removing myself from the business completely, the future of KWP! is very important to me. I’m delighted to entrust it to the new Management Team and Managing Director John Baker, a great business partner and friend that I’ve been delighted to mentor and help develop over the years,” said Andrew Killey.

John Baker said that the agency was excited at what the future holds but added “of course, we are sad to see Andrew go but we wouldn’t be the best ad agency in Adelaide if we didn’t have the capacity and the courage to look into the future and embrace whatever changes are necessary to stay ahead of the pack.”
